August and PV Sindhu seem to have a special connection. Why may you ask? For the third straight year, in this month, the shuttler has managed to reach the final of a major event in her sport.
On Sunday, the lanky Indian will face off against Spain’s Carolina Marin in a repeat of the Olympic final at Rio de Janerio in 2016, but this time in the final of the World Championships in Nanjing. Both players come into the contest on the back of impressive wins, particularly in the quarterfinal and the semifinal stage.
The former pummelled 2015 silver medallist Saina Nehwal and then defeated the in-form HE Bingjiao, who had reached the semis after beating arguably the most shrewd player on the circuit- Tai Tzu Ying. Sindhu, on the other hand, tamed the two best Japanese players in the Women’s Singles draw- Nozomi Okuhara and Akane Yamaguchi- to set up a mouth-watering clash against the Spaniard on Sunday.
The Indian has looked very sharp, particularly in her defense during the course of her competition and has also brought her aggressive game to the fore and that has meant the pressure has never relented from her opponent. On Sunday, however, in Marin she will face an opponent who will bring with her the left-handed angle and Sindhu will need to be wary of the cross-court drop which Marin has the ability to pull off from a wide area in the court. In both those August finals, Sindhu lost in three games.
Can she turn the tide on Sunday to claim Gold for India? Time will tell.
