The twelfth edition of the Indian Premier League is still going on but all eyes of the Indian fans last week were on the announcement of the Indian squad for the ICC World Cup 2019. While most of the players pick themselves in the side, there were doubts over a couple of slots which were eventually claimed by Dinesh Karthik and Ravi Jadeja instead of Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu.
Indian Squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik
Out of the 15, who all will make it to the final XI? Nine out of the 15 slots have been all but decided with as many as four players vying for the remaining two places.
Openers: India has one of the best, if not the best, opening combinations in ODIs with Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan batting at the top of the order. The duo complements each other well and is two of the consistent players in the format which is evident from the fact that they are among the best in the ICC ODI rankings.
Number 3 and number 4: In Virat Kohli, India has the best batsman in the world, not just in ODIs, but across all formats. He is likely to bat in one of the two positions, number 3 more often than not. If the reports are believed to be true, there are chances of KL Rahul coming in at number 3 with Kohli moving down to 4. If Kohli bats at 3 throughout the World Cup, it will be a toss-up between Vijay Shankar and KL Rahul for the number 4 spot with the former likely to get the nod first.
Wicketkeeper: Without any doubt, MS Dhoni will don the gloves for India in the World Cup and Dinesh Karthik will come into play only when the former Indian skipper is injured.
All-rounders: Kedar Jadhav is an underrated player for India in ODIs as the right-hander has scored some crucial runs whenever needed and has always chipped in with the ball and has the knack of picking some crucial wickets. The X-Factor for India in the World Cup is going to be Hardik Pandya as the all-rounder has been in sensational hitting form in the IPL and if he carries it to the World Cup, India won’t be worrying about their finishing. He will also double up as the team’s fifth bowler.
Spinners: There should be no doubt over who the spinners should be on the Indian side. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have been the best spinners in the format ever since they made their debut and the duo is among the top 10 of the ICC bowlers rankings and is automatic choices in the XI.
Pacers: World number 1 ODI bowler Jasprit Bumrah is an automatic pick in the XI and his partner could be varying between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami with Bhuvi getting the nod first.
