Before the Australian squad for the World Cup is announced, there were a lot of talks about the return of the banned duo, Steve Smith and David Warner as the star batsmen have been handed a one-year suspension for their suspension in ball tampering and the ban got over last month. As expected, the duo made it to the fifteen but there were a lot of criticisms over the axing of Peter Handscomb, who was very consistent over the past year and yet, was dropped from the side to accommodate Smith. Apart from Smith and Warner, the Player of the Tournament in 2015 World Cup, Mitchell Starc returns to the side that also has the injured pacer Jhye Richardson.
World cup Team 2019 Australia Squad
Aaron Finch (capt), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon
What will be their playing XI?
Openers: Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja have done well together at the top of the order and with an in-form and a motivated David Warner breathing fire in the ongoing IPL, it is not even a question of Warner walking into the XI and if he does so, he is best suited for opening the innings and Khawaja, in all likelihood, will have to drop down to number 3 allowing Warner and Finch to open the innings.
Number 3 and 4: Usman Khawaja, unfortunately, has to get a demotion in the batting order and is expected to bat at number 3 with Smith batting at number 4. Smith is best suited at number 3 and if he gets his position at 3, then Khawaja might be dropped from the XI, which will be unfair and will allow Shaun Marsh to bat at 4.
All-rounder: Glenn Maxwell will be the one who will be the X-Factor for the defending champions in England as he has the ability to turn the game on its head in a matter of few balls. He is likely to bat at number 5, an ideal position for him. Marcus Stoinis has been in fine form with the bat of late and is expected to bat at number 6. Stoinis has been doing a fine job for Australia as their finisher. Both are capable of rolling their arms and are expected to give at least 10 overs between them.
Wicketkeeper: Alex Carey is the only wicketkeeper in the side and his place in the side is all but guaranteed.
Spinner: The spinner’s slot will be a toss-up between Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon and the former is expected to get the nod over Aussie no. 1 in Tests, Nathan Lyon.
Pacers: Australia have picked as many as five pacers in the side and it is clearly evident that they will be rotating them throughout the competition. But, the first choice pacers will be the returning Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Nathan Coulter-Nile.
