Few things never change in life – birth, death, taxes and South Africa choking in the ICC tournaments. Ever since making their inception in 1992, the Proteas have never won the ICC World Cup, in fact, they never played in a World Cup final. Over the years, they find a way to get out of the tournament as the players have succumbed under pressure on numerous occasions.
The South African team management will hope that the country’s World Cup curse will come to an end in 2019 as they have a world-class team with a handful of legendary names, who deserve a World Cup set to play their last World Cup. At the top of the order, South Africa have two of the best opening batsmen in the business, Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla.
The duo back each other and put their team on top on a consistent basis. Skipper Faf du Plessis will walk out to bat at number three and the right-hander is one of the most consistent ODI batsmen in the world. Following du Plessis will be his childhood friend and the world’s best ODI batsman alongside Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers. De Villiers has accomplished so much and the only thing he is yet to scale is winning the World Cup.
Following the lethal top-4 will be southpaws JP Duminy and David Miller, who have the ability to take away the game from the opposition in a matter of few overs. All-rounder Chris Morris will bring in more stability to the team by batting at number 7 and in all likelihood, he will be sharing the new ball with Kagiso Rabada. Morris will be followed by yet another all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, who can be handy with the bat at number 8 and is likely to be given the responsibility of seeing through the fifth bowler’s quota.
World’s best Test bowler Kagiso Rabada and Chennai Super Kings pacer Lungisani Ngidi will finish the fast bowler’s line-up with Imran Tahir likely to get the nod as the sole spinner in the XI. This is how the Protea squad might look like in England during the 2019 World Cup.
